The Role of NDT in Reinforced Concrete Structures

The load-bearing capacity of a reinforced concrete structure is invisible from the outside. Concrete strength, rebar size and position, cover depth, internal voids and rebar corrosion define how a structure actually performs, yet none of them leaves a trace on the surface. Nondestructive testing makes this hidden information measurable without harming the structure.

In earthquake-prone regions such as Turkey, the subject is closely tied to regulation. Seismic performance assessments, risk assessments of existing buildings, urban renewal programs and retrofit projects all have to rest on measured data. Keeping the number of cores to a minimum, and choosing core locations correctly, depends entirely on the quality of the nondestructive pre-survey.

Concrete Strength Assessment and In-Situ Testing

For estimating in-situ compressive strength, the Schmidt hammer is a fast survey tool that can cover large areas. It does not give a definitive strength value on its own, but it reveals the strength distribution across the structure, pointing to weak zones and the right locations for coring. Once calibrated against core results, it becomes a reliable assessment tool. Ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement indicates concrete density and uniformity, allowing crack depth estimation, assessment of fire or frost damage depth and quality comparison between structural elements.

Rebar Detection, Cover Depth and GPR Concrete Scanning

Concrete GPR uses electromagnetic waves to map rebar, embedded pipes, electrical conduits and layer interfaces within concrete and soil. Scanning before cutting or coring prevents rebar strikes and damage to services, a critical step for both cost and site safety. High-penetration antennas allow slabs, pavements, tunnels and dams to be investigated to depths of several meters.

Cover depth is the first line of defense against rebar corrosion, which makes it a decisive parameter for service life. Determining rebar position, diameter and cover quickly and nondestructively is a standard step both in quality control of new construction and in the assessment of existing structures.

Void Detection, Thickness Measurement and Duct Inspection

Where only one side is accessible, ultrasonic pulse-echo array imaging displays the interior of the concrete as a cross-sectional image. Measuring element thickness, locating internal voids and delaminations, finding grouting defects in post-tensioning ducts and detecting cold joints in shotcrete are where this technology stands out. Hidden defects at precast element joints can also be investigated with minimal drilling.

Construction Standards and Regulations

In-situ concrete assessment follows EN 12504-2 (rebound number), EN 12504-4 (ultrasonic pulse velocity) and EN 13791 (assessment of in-situ compressive strength), adopted in Turkey as TS EN standards. On the design and assessment side, TS 500 and the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY 2018) apply, and existing buildings are assessed under the national rules for identifying at-risk structures. Fabrication and inspection of steel structures fall under EN 1090.

Common NDT Methods in Construction

Schmidt Hammers. Survey in-situ concrete strength quickly and reveal the strength distribution across the structure, guiding where cores should be taken.

Concrete Ultrasonic Testers. Assess concrete uniformity, estimate crack depth, measure element thickness and check for internal voids and duct grouting defects.

Concrete GPR. Maps rebar, embedded services and layer interfaces. Scanning before cutting or coring prevents rebar strikes and damage to services.

Videoscopes. Provide visual assessment inside inaccessible ducts, drains and narrow cavities without excavation.

Ultrasonic Testing. Inspects welded joints and measures section thickness in structural steel.

Coating Thickness Measurement. Verifies that protective coatings on steel structures meet specification.

Magnetic Particle & Penetrant Testing, Phased Array & TOFD and Hardness Testers are also widely used for inspecting structural steel.
